Regular Monthly Programs

At the Lackawanna County Children's Library

The following programs are ones that are held monthly at the Lackawanna County Children's Library.  For more information on when these programs our held, please see our Calendar of Events.

Mother Goose Lap Rap
For babies birth through 23 months old, Mother Goose Lap Rap is a program that will provide parents/caregivers and children with an introductory experience to children’s literature and the library. We offer Mother Goose Lap Rap to families in response to the increased awareness among professionals and parents of the importance of infant and toddler years to language development, which is essential to learning and literacy. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to participate with their children.  Children are encouraged to borrow library books, so please remember to bring your library card!

Tales for Tots
The Tales for Tots program serves as an introduction to a library storytime for toddlers ages 2 to 3 and their parents/caregivers.  This storytime will not only introduce literature and related activities to young children, but it will also enable parents to become familiar with quality children’s literature.  In this storytime, the librarian will read age-appropriate picture books and lead the parents and children in fingerplays and creative movement activities.  Parents are encouraged to participate with their children.  When the stories are finished, there will be an age-appropriate craft for parents and children to share. Children are encouraged to borrow library books, so please remember to bring your library card!

Pre-K Storytime

The Pre-K Storytime program serves as an important learning experience for young children ages 4 to 5. For each child, the enjoyment of books is building a solid foundation for learning to read.  Good picture books enrich a child’s oral vocabulary.  More importantly, they are learning to listen. For many children, storytime programs are one of their first experiences in enjoying and sharing something with a group their own age and an adult who is not a relative. Parents are encouraged to participate with their children.  When the stories are finished, there will be a puppet show and an age-appropriate craft for parents and children to share. Children are encouraged to borrow library books, so please remember to bring a library card!

Music and Movement
This program promotes active learning through interactive stories, creative movement, and music.  The interactive stories in this program have rhythm, active participation, and/or are told through song.  Creative movement is the way the child moves throughout the activities, i.e. dancing, motions to songs and rhymes, etc.  Music is played throughout the program, including action songs where the children act out and sing the words to the songs.  Children will also learn about rhythm by using instruments.  Children are encouraged to borrow library books and sound recordings, so please remember to bring your library card!
